Marié's latest video was put up just before she kicked off her summer tour as a special guest on the Lilith Fair 2010, and is a beautiful new original + piano dedicated to Los Angeles, her hometown. In the description box, Marié describes how she has seen people come and go in Los Angeles and how alluring, yet cruel the city can be. She explains how careers have been destroyed and have taken off, and how she met so many aspiring musicians in her teens and early twenties, many of which left the city within a matter of years. Lastly, Marié did an interview with American Cheerleader Magazine recently, where she talks about her movie, "Feel," which will be released in 2010.
Time Out With... Recording Artist Marié Digby
American Cheerleader: Your sophomore album, Breathing Underwater, was released this summer. Can you tell us a little about what our readers can expect from your second CD?

Marié Digby: They can expect a lot of stories about the heart. The ups and downs of love—which tends to be my favorite songwriting subject. The sound is a combination of singer/songwriter and pop/rhythmic.

AC: How did you come up with the name of this album? What inspired this collection of songs?

MD: I was falling in and out of love while making of this album. It was made during a very short two month period. So it’s a snapshot of my life last winter. I named it Breathing Underwater because it was such a beautiful image and represented trying to accomplish the impossible. That’s how it felt to make this album.

AC: Have you always wanted to be a singer?

MD: I've always loved singing, but I didn't sing in front of an audience until I was 18 years old. I'd always loved it, but I didn’t have the nerve to pursue it as a profession until I was in college.

AC: Some would say that your success was self-made. What made you decide to take your career into your own hands and start drumming up publicity for yourself on YouTube?

MD: [When I first started out], I felt so lucky to have signed a record deal and made an album, but at the same time I was scared to death because I didn't have a release date. I pictured my album collecting dust on a shelf for years and that’s what motivated me to create my own buzz. I thought, "How can I let the world know about my music? Should I go out in my car and tour the country? Or should I post some videos on the web?" I was just trying to think of any way to promote myself, and my music, so that my album had a chance to see the light of day.

AC: Would you recommend other aspiring singers to do the same?

MD: I absolutely recommend other singers to do the same thing. The most important thing to remember is that no matter how talented you are, if you don't sing in front of other people, no one's ever going to know your talent! That’s why my advice is always, "play live...and post live performances."

AC: What's your first single off this album? What was the inspiration behind it?

MD: My first single is "Avalanche" and it's about a relationship that's on the rocks. I felt like I was ready to put everything aside to make things work with someone, but I wasn't sure if he felt the same. The song is about the moment in which both parties have to decide if it's all worth it.

AC: Getting into the recording industry can be tough. How have you dealt with the rejection that comes with following your dreams?

MD: I think that when you love it as much as I do, the rejection is nothing but a little bump in the road. When you know the end goal, there's nothing that can get in your way. You just have to remain focused.

AC: How has singing impacted your life?

MD: Singing is my therapy. It's how I remember the most wonderful moments of my life and leave behind the most painful.

AC: What changed for you after your first album came out?

MD: My first album gave me the chance to tour around the world and live out a lot of my dreams. I would say the experience I gained from making and promoting my first album really helped me when it came time to make my sophomore album.

AC: Why do you think our readers will like your music?

MD: I think everyone will be able to relate to several songs on my album. They're very autobiographical, and the lyrics come straight from my heart. I try to be as honest as possible and aim to make music that inspires people.

AC: What are you obsessed with right now?

MD: I absolutely love to travel! I went to Cambodia and Poland recently and my goal is to go to Ireland next year. I'm also obsessed with the Food Network and it's made me want to take some cooking classes. [read more]

MAMi Magazine and Fredericksburg.com Interview

File Under: News, Pictures

Posted by Claire on Dec 01 2009

Marié's been a busy girl lately, with her nationwide tour kicking off on the 30th and photoshoots for Arden B and MAMi Magazine, but she still found time to do an over-the-phone interview with Fredericksburg.com about her upcoming movie, "Feel." I added some behind-the-scenes pictures from Marié's MAMi Magazine photoshoot as well; Marié looks beautiful in these pictures, and I can't wait to see the rest of the photoshoot.
For the free lance star
Two years ago, Marie Digby became an Internet sensation when she uploaded a YouTube video of her covering Rihanna's "Umbrella."

Now on her second U.S. album, "Breathing Underwater," Digby can't wait to prove to the world that she's more than just a girl with a guitar.

In a recent phone interview, Digby opened up about her departure from the indie music scene. "I wanted to keep it honest, and for it to reflect my life and what I went through," she said.

"But I also wanted everything musically to change. I felt it might be a risk, but it was something I needed to do now--and I wanted to have beats and for the production to be more lush."

Compared to her first album, "Breathing Underwater" explodes with pop tracks, but it still maintains the same pensive and emotional lyrics that originally landed her fans.

However, Digby wants to make it clear that deep down she's still the same girl. "It's just as 'me' as the first [album], except I didn't really have the guts to do it the first time around. It's so easy, especially as a singer-songwriter, to fall into this very acoustic sound. I wanted to challenge myself to take those songs that do work in a stripped-down way and see if they still have life when there is more going on behind it."

The affable and modest Digby readily admits that she had to conquer a little self-doubt to make her new album.

"I was so scared because I wanted to make an album that would please all the fans, but I knew that wasn't necessarily possible--how could I please every single person? I was also scared because I didn't know if I had the vocal chops to sing anything but acoustic," she said.

Jumping through the songs on "Breathing Underwater" will easily prove that Digby had nothing to worry about. She is confident and strong from beginning to end.

On "Avalanche" the album's first single, Digby's vocal cords soar with the beats.

On "Feel"--Digby's favorite track--her voice carries the heavy emotion of the lyrics, beautifully pleading for her subject to show her that he can feel.

New Vlog from Ameblo (In Japanese!)

File Under: Videos

Posted by Claire on Oct 31 2009

The staff at Marié's Ameblo blog have put up a new vlog, about the upcoming mini-movie, "Feel". In the video, Marié describes a bit about the story's plot, her best friend as one of the main roles, and more! Thanks to Esmé for the translation: "I haven't started filming, but I've done the script for the movie, with the story's plot having half of what really happened, while the other half coming from my imagination. My best friend will be acting in the movie as herself, but the love interest would be a different cast."
