Everything began in New York City, New York, when the
beautiful and talented singer/songwriter, Marié Christina Digby, was born on April 16, 1983 to
Emiko and Matt Digby. During her childhood and teen years, Marié always
felt compelled to write songs, and after her
middle school years, she wrote the song, which is now on her debut album, "Miss Invisible", to explain
how she felt "invisible" and how she wanted to "fit in" with the rest of her school. A song that completely differs from the likes of "Miss Invisible" and, respectively, "Unfold", in which Marié describes how she broke out of her shell and began feeling
confident in herself.
Marié took up piano lessons at an very early age; four years old. During her teen years, Marié describes how she would "come home from school, do my homework, and after everyone was asleep, I'd write songs." This is where songs like "Miss Invisible" relate back to, as Marié explains in a blog entry from 2008, "(these songs) really are a collection of stories and experiences of my last 10 years." Every since she wrote her first few songs, she knew she wanted to pursue a career in music.
After her "invisible" middle school years, Marié's mother, Emiko, enrolled her in a Catholic High School, where she really found out that she wanted to pursue music. She explains in a blog entry from 2008, "If there were a beginning point in the map of my life when I began to write music... (it would be when) Sister Carol (one of Marié's teachers at her Catholic High School) thought that we should listen to Joanna (one of her classmates) perform a song in the dining hall on the piano, so we all left class and walked over there. Joanna sat down at this old brown wooden piano, and we all took seats around her... (and) she began singing. It was one of the most beautiful things I had ever heard. I remember so clearly how this pale white glow was coming in through the huge glass windows next to us, making it almost seem like Joanna was this angel. I just couldn't believe that she had written this moving piece of music by herself."
It was not until the age of seventeen that Marié took up acoustic guitar; while she was at the University of Berkeley, Marié wrote her song, "Beauty In Walking Away", which explained her feelings about wanting to leave college and pursue a career in music. So, two years later, she did; starting with the Patene Pro Voice competition in 2004, which was truly the start of Marié's music career. Along with working with a professional recording label on an album, the prizes included $5,000 and a Wurlitzer Grand Piano.
After performing at countless open mics, night clubs, and venues, Marié signed to Rondor Music, a subsidiary of Universal Music Group, in early 2005. In the end, Marié chose Hollywood Records by the end of 2005, and finished her debut album, "Unfold", in late 2006. To introduce her to Disney, Marié's song, "Fool", was included in the combination record, "Girls Next", in August 2006.
For quite some time, Marié didn't know when the actual release date of her album would be; so, in order to gain visibility, she signed up to YouTube in May 2006, and began posting cover videos of other artists' songs one year later. She took it slow for a few months; not really expecting any more than twenty views per day. It was not until she posted her cover of Rihanna's hit, "Umbrella," in late 2007 that she started gaining popularity on YouTube-in the end, her cover of "Umbrella" reached 13,000,000 views, and is still being viewed now.
So, what happened from there? Well, Marié's video reached 500,000 views within a few weeks, and within time, she was on the front page of YouTube, and was noticed by professionals in late 2007. From there, well, it's all history.
Her debut album, "Unfold", was finally released on April 8, 2008, debuted #29 on Billboard 200 charts, and sold 18,000 copies in its first week. Only a month after the release, she toured across the nation and into some parts of Asia, respectively beginning in late May of 2008. Her first tour, respectively being The Uncle Sam 2008 Tour, ended in July, when, in August, a Japanese edition of her debut, "Unfold", was produced, which began the process of recording two albums at the same time: "Second Home" and "Breathing Underwater," in Fall.
She wrote a whopping seventeen songs for her sophomore effort, "Breathing Underwater", while recording her first fully Japanese album, "Second Home". The production of both albums, without a manager to keep it all intact, took a total of four months. On March 4, 2009, her first Japanese album, "Second Home", was released, which sent Marié into another round of promotion in Japan.
While touring in Japan for about a month, her sophomore release, "Breathing Underwater", was leaked on YouTube-full songs, no less-on April 8, 2009, which was, ironically, just one year after the release of her debut, "Unfold". Marié handled the situation with class, responding to the leak by saying, "In this day and age, albums are going to leak pretty much no matter what you do to try and prevent it. It's sad, but it's just a part of life."
So, because of the leak and for personal reasons, her sophomore release was pushed from the original release date, May 27, to June 23. After many months, Marié decided to push the release back again to July 21, so that she could find a manager to make the final touches for the release perfect. Again, the release date was pushed back to September 8, and then finally, September 15. On June 24, the Japanese edition, with a bonus four songs, of "Breathing Underwater" was released.
Now, Marié has three studio albums, with seven singles for each, and is currently writing for a possible second studio Japanese record. She is currently on tour for her second English release, Breathing Underwater. Marié has just finished filming for her short film which is to be centered around the music from "Breathing Underwater", and be a love story as well. The film will be entitled Feel and will be released in spring or summer of 2010. What's new? Well, watch this space.
